Join us for this captivating episode of “The 13th Hour” as we dive deeper into Tyler’s unique style and vibrant mind.
1 - At 13am, we aim to celebrate and showcase a broad range of creative roles, disciplines and skillsets. How would you describe yourself and your role within the creative world to those unfamiliar with your work?
My name is Tyler Spangler, and I am a freelance graphic designer. I enjoy experimenting with collage, typography, and bright colors.
2 - Another aspect that sets 13am apart is our commitment to diversity and representation among our artists. Could you share a bit about your background and where you call home?
I was born and raised in Southern California. I spent five years in Seattle, and now I’m back in Orange County.
3 - How would you define your artistic style? Has it evolved or undergone any changes over time?
My style is a mix of 60s hippie, 70s punk, and 90s surf/cartoon culture. My style has adapted by including an expanded color palette, but the ethos has remained the same.
4 - Can you walk us through your creative process? How do you transform an idea into a tangible piece of work?
I like to sit down and create whatever comes to mind. Sometimes, ideas will come from a song I’m listening to or an experience I’ve had. If I’m ever stuck on what to create, I’ll look through my old work and reinterpret something into a new piece.
5 - In terms of inspiration, where do you go to find this? Who were your main influencers and inspirations as you were growing up?
The Simpsons, 90s Nickelodeon/MTV, surfing, punk/metal, George Carlin, and anything with lots of color.
6 - What advice would you offer aspiring artists looking to establish themselves in the industry?
Make what you aren’t seeing other people make. Create your own world, and don’t be afraid to share it with everyone.
7 - Creative roadblocks affect many individuals in our field. How do you unwind and revitalize your creative energy? Are there any hobbies or passions you pursue outside of your work?
I love to surf, work out, and eat. If I’m feeling totally uncreative, I’ll do one of these three things, and I’ll usually be ready to rock.
8 - Reflecting on your career, could you share a standout project or collaboration that you consider a highlight? How did the opportunity come about?
My collaboration with Coach was a significant milestone. I was emailed by someone from Coach, asking if I wanted to collaborate by creating a pattern using their monogram, several type pieces for handbags, and help brand the two pop-up events correlating with the release. It was my most prestigious client at the time and a super fun project where I was allowed a lot of creative freedom.
9 - Can you provide a little insight into your current projects and any upcoming plans you have in the pipeline? Is there anything we should be looking out for in the not too distant future?
The super big jobs come intermittently, but I am consistently doing work for musicians and newspapers/magazines.
10 - What has your experience been like collaborating with 13am thus far, and what motivated you to join forces with us?
I am always interested in collaborating on exciting new projects. I liked the aesthetic that 13am had and wanted to see what we could create together.
11 - Looking ahead, what would be your dream project or client to tackle in the future?
I like anything where my work is displayed in the physical world. Since I work mostly digitally, it’s rare for my work to enter the physical space, but when it does, it is really special for me.
12 - To conclude on a lighter note, imagine hosting a dinner party where you could invite four individuals, living or deceased, who would they be and why?
George Carlin - I would love to hear his thoughts.
Kurt Cobain - I would love to hear his new music.
Chris Farley - I would love to giggle and be wacky with him.
Anthony Bourdain - I would love to talk about his travels and hear his stories.
13 - If you were granted the power of time travel, which historical event would you choose to witness firsthand, and what intrigues you about it?
I’d probably travel back to the 70s to experience surfing when there weren’t so many crowds.
