In the twenty-third episode of “The 13th Hour,” we are delighted to feature a conversation with Nibera, a freelance visual artist and graphic designer from Slovenia whose work spans various mediums, including fine art, new media, photography, and illustration.

In our discussion with Nibera, we explore how her homeland profoundly influences her day-to-day work and learn about her eclectic style, which blends surrealism, minimalism, and retro aesthetics. We also uncover her dream project: creating an immersive, large-scale installation for a major art festival. Additionally, we reflect on her standout project thus far, her Master’s Thesis, “Spectrozator.” Join us for this brilliant episode of “The 13th Hour” as we dive deeper into Nibera’s unique style and vibrant mind.

1 - At 13am, we aim to celebrate and showcase a broad range of creative roles, disciplines and skillsets. How would you describe yourself and your role within the creative world to those unfamiliar with your work?

I am a freelance visual artist and graphic designer. My work spans various mediums, including fine art, new media, photography, and illustration. I specialize in creating immersive visual experiences, often merging analog and digital techniques to produce unique, thought-provoking pieces.

2 - Another aspect that sets 13am apart is our commitment to diversity and representation among our artists. Could you share a bit about your background and where you call home?

I hail from Slovenia and have a rich background in visual arts, having studied at the Academy for Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana. My work is deeply influenced by my Slovenian heritage, and I draw inspiration from the country’s natural beauty and cultural history.

3 - How would you define your artistic style? Has it evolved or undergone any changes over time?

My artistic style is eclectic, blending surrealism, minimalism, and retro aesthetics into what I call "Retro Futuristic Nostalgia." Over time, my work has evolved from traditional fine art techniques to incorporating new media and digital art, reflecting my growing interest in technology and its impact on art.

4 - Can you walk us through your creative process? How do you transform an idea into a tangible piece of work?

My creative process begins with extensive research and conceptualization. I draw sketches and gather reference materials, then move on to digital or analog creation, depending on the project. I often experiment with different techniques and materials, allowing the piece to evolve organically until it reaches its final form.

5 - In terms of inspiration, where do you go to find this? Who were your main influencers and inspirations as you were growing up?

I find inspiration in nature, music, and history. Growing up, I was influenced by the vibrant visuals of 80s and 90s pop culture, which continues to inform my aesthetic choices.

6 - What advice would you offer aspiring artists looking to establish themselves in the industry?

My advice to aspiring artists is to be persistent and open to learning. Embrace your unique voice and don't be afraid to experiment. Consistency is key; keep honing your craft even when times are tough. Networking and building relationships within the industry are crucial, as is continually improving your skills. Never give up, and stay true to your passion.

7 - Creative roadblocks affect many individuals in our field. How do you unwind and revitalize your creative energy? Are there any hobbies or passions you pursue outside of your work?

To unwind and revitalize my creative energy, I enjoy hiking, reading, and watching films. These activities help me disconnect from work and return with fresh perspectives and ideas.

8 - Reflecting on your career, could you share a standout project or collaboration that you consider a highlight? How did the opportunity come about?

A standout project in my career was my Master's Thesis, "Spectrozator." This interactive audio-visual installation was a significant milestone, showcasing the intersection of art and technology. The project involved creating a geometric sculpture as a canvas for projection mapping, where viewers could interact by pressing keys on a synthesizer to trigger the projection. This opportunity allowed me to explore the parallels between sound and image deeply, creating an engaging and immersive experience for the audience.

9 - Can you provide a little insight into your current projects and any upcoming plans you have in the pipeline? Is there anything we should be looking out for in the not too distant future?

Currently, I'm working on several commission-based projects that are exciting and diverse. However, due to non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), I can't share specific details about them at this time. Stay tuned by following me on Instagram at @nibera_visuals for future updates once I am able to disclose more information.

10 - What has your experience been like collaborating with 13am thus far, and what motivated you to join forces with us?

I joined forces with them to reach a broader audience and to be part of a community that celebrates creativity in all its forms.

11 - Looking ahead, what would be your dream project or client to tackle in the future?

My dream project would be to create an immersive, large-scale installation for a major international art festival. Working with cutting-edge technology and collaborating with other artists across disciplines would be dreamy.

12 - To conclude on a lighter note, imagine hosting a dinner party where you could invite four individuals, living or deceased, who would they be and why?

For my dinner party, I would invite Franz Roh, for his surreal creativity; Hayao Miyazaki, for his storytelling genius; Björk, for her innovative music; and Nikola Tesla, for his visionary ideas. Their diverse perspectives would make for an enlightening and inspiring evening.

13 - If you were granted the power of time travel, which historical event would you choose to witness firsthand, and what intrigues you about it?

If I could time travel, I would choose to witness the Apollo 11 moon landing. The sheer ambition and achievement of that event symbolize human ingenuity and the boundless possibilities of exploration and discovery
