Yo Hosoyamada is a Japanese editorial and commercial illustrator based in London, UK. Inspired by the urban and natural landscapes around her, she creates eye-catching and dynamic illustrations that often explore storytelling, spatiality, and bold colors. Her work aims to depict intimate moments found in everyday life, with careful consideration for lighting and textural qualities. Yo’s distinctive style reflects her ability to blend the vibrancy of city life with the tranquility of natural settings, resulting in captivating visual narratives.

Originally from Tokyo, Yo initially pursued a career in architecture. She studied at the prestigious Bartlett School of Architecture, following the traditional path to becoming an architect. However, after graduating and working as an architectural assistant at a design firm, she realized that the job did not fully utilize her creative skills. During this time, she discovered illustration and began dedicating all her free time to it. “During my studies, I was constantly challenged, pushing my creative skills forward,” she tells Creative Boom. “But the job didn’t feel like I was fully utilizing what I’d learned. That’s when I discovered illustration and fell madly in love with the art of image-making.”

Since graduating from the Bartlett School of Architecture and Camberwell College of Arts, Yo has worked on various projects with notable clients such as WIRED UK, YouTube JP, ELLE Magazine, Monocle Magazine, and The Times. Her work explores colorful and dynamic compositions, dealing with fun little narratives within cityscapes and architectural spaces. Yo’s passion for architecture remains a significant influence on her work, as she often seeks out interesting and unique pieces of architecture during her travels. Her illustrations not only capture the essence of these cityscapes but also tell the backstories and histories that lie behind their walls.
