JULIE ALEX
IN THE WILD
#ARTIST049 | RUSSIAN
Russian Illustrator Julie Alex creates unique portraits, still-life artworks, and landscapes that are instantly recognisable thanks to her use of colour and one-of-a-kind slanted style. Beautifully coloured and intricately textured, the work is a combination of her everyday observations, including objects and figures around her home and town, and her detailed daydreams.
Perhaps the most striking aspect of Julie’s work, aside from the stunning colour palette and the clever, often layered, compositions, is the angle at which it is drawn. Slightly but noticeably tilted, many of her pieces have been rendered in such a way that they follow a more or less diagonal line. It’s an unusual and captivating technique which Julie says was born from a desire to draw comfortably.
These days Julie has swapped out pencil and paper for digital tools, and her go-to method is to draw using Adobe Fresco or Procreate on her iPad and Photoshop on her computer. Despite this, her images still have a delightfully tactile feel, possibly due to how she uses her software. Whilst having no formal training in the craft, and “knowing more about art history than the rules of drawing”, she’s gone on to build a portfolio of super eye-catching work.
